Principles and Techniques of Floral Design
Note: This course is part of Module 2 of the intensive Modern Floristry course.
This course lays the essential foundation for anyone who wants to delve into floral art with technical awareness and aesthetic sensitivity. Through the study of fundamental principles of floral design —such as balance, proportion, rhythm, harmony, and focal point—students will learn to compose with intention, understanding how to construct a visually coherent and emotionally compelling piece.
We will also explore basic composition techniques such as spirals , the use of lines, blocks and groupings , which will allow us to structure bouquets in a stable, fluid and professional way.
One of the main focuses of this module will be the practical study of color theory , not only from an aesthetic perspective, but also as a narrative tool: how to create harmonies, contrasts, or monochromes that enhance the atmosphere of a floral creation.
We'll do two practical exercises in which each student will design two bouquets: one using the spiral technique and the other using chicken wire, applying the principles learned. We'll also cover the art of packaging , understanding packaging as an extension of the design and not just protection: a visual and conceptual closure that frames the floral piece with coherence and care.
Objective: Understand and apply the principles of floral design and basic techniques.
Practical exercise: Making bouquets and packaging (spiral and chicken wire)
